Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often play against each other. Howard had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
