Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, and a few battling for the low hand.
