Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
