Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low.
