Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
